Need Help Understanding New Year Co-Pays? Out-of-Pocket Costs?

Avita Can Help!

A new year often brings with it important changes to your medical and prescription benefits. On January 1st of each year, deductibles, co-pay amounts, formularies, and monthly premiums can change. These changes are usually communicated, but sometimes understanding them can be a challenge.

Below are some ideas about how to stay on top of your annual medical and prescription benefit changes:

Don’t Fall Through the Medicare Part D “Donut Hole”!

Avita’s staff constantly monitors medication charges for Medicare Part D recipients to know when your benefit plan will begin to enter the coverage gap, also known as “the donut hole.” When this happens, we will notify you, your prescriber, caregiver, and/or case manager to assist in developing a plan to address the medication expenses during the coverage gap. Medicare Part D recipients with the LIS (low income subsidy) benefit have no coverage gap.

Co-pay Cards Can Help Reduce Your Out-of-Pocket Expense

For people on private insurance, many drug companies now offer co-pay assistance cards for name brand medications, which can help reduce the cost of co-pays. Depending on the program, some co-pays can be partially reduced or completely eliminated. Avita’s staff will check to see if a co-pay program is available for you. If the program allows, Avita will automatically enroll you in the appropriate program. If you need to start the process of applying for a co-pay card, we can help. Avita’s staff will provide the information you need to get the process started. We want to make it easy for you to take advantage of the programs available so that you can focus on your health and taking your medications consistently and correctly.

Are You Uninsured or Have You Been Dropped From Your Insurance?

Avita’s staff will help you to identify programs that can assist with medication costs if you have no insurance or have been dropped from your coverage.

Generics May Be Available and May Help Reduce Out-Of-Pocket Costs

Avita’s staff monitors which medications are currently available in generic form as generics can significantly reduce your medication costs. Some private insurance companies offer benefits that reduce your co-pay if you switch to a generic and, in some cases, the co-pay may not be required. If you would like to know which medications are available in generic form, give us a call. If your medication is offered in generic form you can consult your prescriber to determine if it is appropriate for your needs. See the related article in this issue for medications scheduled for release in generic form in the coming months.
