June 5th is HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day, a day to recognize long-term HIV survivors and increase awareness of their needs, challenges, and experiences. First observed in 2014, the date is significant. The CDC originally reported on five cases of an unexplainable sickness afflicting young gay men on June 5, 1981, marking the beginning of the AIDS epidemic.
HIV Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day celebrates the resilience and experiences of individuals who have been living with HIV for decades. These survivors have witnessed the evolution of HIV treatment and continue to face unique challenges, including stigma, aging-related health issues, and mental health concerns.
Let’s honor their journey and commit to addressing the needs of long-term survivors.
