About PrEP

PrEP is one of the most powerful tools in the fight against HIV. Taken regularly, it can decrease the risk of HIV infection by up to 99% and is most effective when paired with other prevention tools, such as condoms. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved two PrEP medications: Truvada® and Descovy®.

You may be a candidate for PrEP if you have:

  • Had anal or vaginal sex in the last six months and:
    • A sexual partner with HIV
    • Not consistently used condoms
    • Been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the past six months
  • Injected drugs and:
    • Have an injection partner with HIV
    • Share needles, syringes, or other equipment to inject drugs (such as cookers)

Talk to your doctor to learn if PrEP is right for you. PrEP is covered by most insurance and you may not have any out-of-pocket costs. Avita participates in Ready, Set, PrEP, a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services program that provides access to the medication at no cost to people who qualify.

Avita is committed to improving access to PrEP, especially to those who may be more likely to be affected by HIV, but often don’t receive PrEP, including youths, Black men who have sex with men (MSM), and Black women. While men and women of color are most burdened by HIV, only 10% of people who take PrEP are Black.
